Good oral hygiene essential

Inadequate oral hygiene and poor oral health can result in serious infections in elderly and ill people with an impaired general condition. Bacteria can spread from the mouth to other parts of the body, such as the heart and lungs. It is therefore essential that both the teeth and mouth are kept clean!

Increased risk of oral diseases amongst the elderly

People who are ill or elderly may have difficulty maintaining their oral hygiene. If so, they will need help brushing their teeth, since poor oral hygiene increases the risk of developing caries and loosening of the teeth. Left untreated, these diseases can result in pain and discomfort in the mouth. They can also lead to difficulty in eating, which can result in malnutrition and a further deterioration in the patient's general condition. With good oral hygiene, these conditions can be avoided.
